What a Fractional CTO Does and When You Need One
What a fractional CTO does month to month, the signs you need one, what it costs from our published tiers, and how it compares with a full-time hire.

What does a fractional CTO do?
A fractional CTO is a part-time technical executive. They set architecture and technical strategy, vet vendors and hires, own the roadmap, review code, and report to you every month on what shipped and what comes next. You get senior technical leadership on a monthly retainer instead of a full-time executive salary.
In practice the work falls into five jobs:
- • Architecture and technical strategy. Deciding how the product should be built and what to build next, and writing those decisions down.
- • Vendor and hire vetting. Reading a proposal, a codebase or a hosting bill and saying whether it is reasonable, and vetting the people you are about to hire.
- • Roadmap ownership. Prioritizing, sequencing and saying no to the wrong things.
- • Code review. An independent senior read of what your team or contractors are shipping.
- • A monthly executive report. What shipped, what changed and what is next, in terms a non-technical owner can act on.
When do you need a fractional CTO?
You need one when technical decisions keep landing on people who are not equipped to make them: a vendor proposal nobody can judge, a rebuild-or-patch call, a developer hire, a security question. If those decisions come up every month or every week and a wrong call is expensive, a part-time senior owner is usually the right size of fix.
The common signs:
- • You are a non-technical founder reading proposals and contracts with nobody to check them.
- • You work with developers or an agency and cannot tell whether the work is good.
- • You have more than one contractor or engineer to coordinate and nobody with authority over technical direction.
- • A previous vendor left you with a system nobody fully understands.
- • Your product works, but you are about to make a platform, hosting or build-versus-buy decision that is hard to reverse.
If your only need is one specific piece of software built, that is a project, not a retainer. See our guide to what custom software costs in Miami and South Florida.
How does a fractional CTO compare with a full-time CTO?
A fractional CTO gives you the same kind of technical leadership for a fraction of the time, on a monthly retainer you can end. A full-time CTO is a salaried executive who is present every day. The right choice depends on how much technical decision-making your business actually generates each week.
| No technical lead | Fractional CTO | Full-time CTO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost structure | No salary, but technical decisions fall to whoever is available | Monthly retainer sized to the days you need | Executive salary plus recruiting |
| Time commitment | None | Roughly 1 day a week (Light) to 2 to 3 days a week (Standard) | Full time |
| If your needs change | Nothing to adjust | Month-to-month with 30 days' notice | Severance and a new recruiting cycle |
| Best for | Businesses with no software at stake | Businesses that need senior judgment on a regular rhythm | Businesses whose workload fills a full week of technical leadership |
How much does a fractional CTO cost?
At Cuanto Labs, Light is $2,500 to $4,000 a month at roughly one day a week, and Standard is $6,000 to $9,000 a month at two to three days a week. GoFractional's research puts a typical fractional CTO retainer at $10,500 to $15,000 a month, based on about 15 hours a week at $175 to $250 an hour.
| Option | Price | Time | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuanto Labs Light | $2,500 to $4,000 a month | Roughly 1 day a week | Architecture, vendor and hire vetting, roadmap, code review, monthly executive report |
| Cuanto Labs Standard | $6,000 to $9,000 a month | 2 to 3 days a week | Everything in Light, plus a hands-on technical lead and team management |
| Market benchmark (GoFractional) | $10,500 to $15,000 a month | About 15 hours a week | Typical retainer, from $175 to $250 an hour |
GoFractional reports that fractional CTOs average $215 an hour across the market, with a 25th to 75th percentile band of $175 to $250 and a wider observed range of $60 to $354 depending on seniority and scope. The full breakdown of both tiers is in our fractional CTO cost guide, and current terms are on the fractional CTO service page.
Which tier do you need, Light or Standard?
Choose by how often technical decisions arise, not by budget. If they come up about once a month and can wait for a scheduled call, Light covers it. If they come up weekly, or you manage developers, Standard adds a hands-on technical lead and team management. Many start with Light and move up later.
You agree the tier in writing before the first billing cycle, and either side can end the engagement with 30 days' notice.
Can a fractional CTO work with my existing developers?
Yes. Most of this engagement is architecture guidance, code review and roadmap direction for a team you already have. A fractional CTO does not replace your developers, they provide oversight and direction for them, and they are a second senior voice when you hire or change vendors.
How does a fractional CTO engagement start?
It starts with a thirty-minute discovery call on where your team and roadmap stand today. Then Light or Standard is agreed in writing, and the work begins: architecture, vendor and hire vetting, roadmap and code review, with a monthly executive report. There is no annual contract.
