Update or Rebuild Your iOS App? A Decision Guide for the iPhone Duo Era
Should you update your existing iOS app for iPhone Duo or rebuild it? A decision guide for owners: the signals that point each way, the questions to ask before accepting any quote, and why a paid audit comes first.

Every app owner facing Apple's April 2027 iPhone Duo requirements ends up at the same fork: patch what exists, or start over. Agencies tend to answer that question according to what they prefer to sell. This guide gives you the signals to decide for yourself, before you ask anyone for a quote.
The Apple facts behind it are narrow. From April 2027, every app submission needs iPhone Duo screenshots and a build with the iOS and iPadOS 27 SDK or later. Apple's own advice for existing apps is to recompile with Xcode 27.1. Whether that is enough for your app depends on what is inside it.
Should I update my existing iOS app or rebuild it?
Update when the app builds with a current Xcode, uses standard resizable layouts, and the codebase is understood by someone you can reach. Rebuild when the project cannot be compiled, nobody knows how it works, or the layouts are fixed throughout. Everything in between is decided by a short audit, not by opinion.
The deciding factor is rarely how the app looks. It is how much of the existing code you can still trust.
What signals point to a simple update?
Updating is the right call when most of these are true:
- • It builds today. A clean build with a current Xcode succeeds, or fails on a short, fixable list.
- • The layouts resize. Apple's guidance is that apps using standard system components and designed for resizing adapt with little adjustment.
- • You have the source and the accounts. The code repository, the developer account and the signing assets are all in your hands.
- • There is a person who knows it. Either the original developer or a new one who has read the code and is willing to put their name on it.
In that case the work is a rebuild of the binary, testing on Duo sizes, and screenshots. It is routine maintenance with a deadline, and it should be priced like it.
What signals point to a rebuild?
A rebuild starts to make sense when several of these are true at once:
- • The project does not compile and the dependencies it needs are no longer maintained.
- • It leans on
UIRequiresFullScreen. Under the iOS 27 SDK that setting no longer opts an app out of resizing (Apple TN3192), so a fixed-canvas design needs to be reworked, not just rebuilt. - • Layouts are fixed throughout, with hard-coded sizes on most screens instead of a few.
- • Nobody can explain the architecture, and the original developer is unreachable.
- • The app needs new features anyway. If you were about to rebuild next year, doing it now avoids paying twice.
One of these alone rarely justifies starting over. Three or four together usually do.
Why does a paid audit come before any quote?
Because the cost range is wide and the signals above can only be read from the project itself. A quote given without opening the code is either padded to cover the unknowns or low enough to win the job and grow later through change orders. Neither is good for you.
A scoped audit answers four things: does it build, how many screens have fixed layouts, what third-party dependencies are stale, and what the realistic path to App Store submission is. The output is a written recommendation, update or rebuild, with reasons. That is a deliverable you can take to any other studio.
What should I ask before accepting a quote?
Ask these before signing anything, from us or anyone else:
- • Is the price fixed, and what is included? Design time for screenshots and Duo-size testing should be named, not assumed.
- • Who owns the code and accounts at handover? The answer should be you, in writing.
- • What happens if the project does not build? There should be a defined step for recovery, not an open-ended hourly clock.
- • When will it be submitted? Ask for a date well before April 2027. Updates scheduled for the last month are the ones that run into trouble.

How much does it cost to rebuild an app instead?
For new builds, our published fixed-price band for mobile apps for iOS and Android starts at $15,000, typically 8 to 16 weeks, built with React Native and Expo so one codebase ships to both stores. The full bands are on our pricing page.
We do not publish a price for updating an existing app, because it depends on the audit result. That is by design: the same label covers a routine rebuild and a long recovery.
Where Cuanto Labs fits
We are a founder-led studio: Eliran Yihye scopes and leads every engagement, working with a small, vetted network of senior contractors. A meaningful share of the work we quote is not greenfield. It is taking over a codebase a previous developer left half-finished or undocumented, which is why our rescue and update projects begin with an audit.
If you have an app and a deadline, start with the free audit. See our mobile app services for how we build, and the iPhone Duo readiness checklist for the owner-level checks you can run first.
