Why Does My WordPress Site Keep Getting Hacked?

Why a WordPress site gets reinfected after cleanup, the usual causes, how to tell a real fix from a surface clean, and what stops it from coming back.

Why Does My WordPress Site Keep Getting Hacked?

Why does my WordPress site keep getting hacked after I clean it?

Usually because the cleanup removed the damage but not the cause. Common reasons are a hidden backdoor left behind, the same outdated plugin still running, stolen passwords that still work, or a server that is itself weak. Until the entry point is closed, attackers can walk back in.

A cleanup that only deletes visible malware is like mopping a floor under a leaking pipe. A proper fix finds how the attacker got in, closes that path and checks every other place a copy could hide.

How do hackers get into a WordPress site in the first place?

Most often through plugins. Patchstack's 2026 report counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42 percent from 2024. Of those, 91 percent were in plugins, 9 percent in themes and 6 in WordPress core. That is why outdated plugins are the first thing to check after a repeat infection.

Two numbers from the same report explain why reinfection is common. 46 percent of the flaws had no patch available when they were made public, and the median time to mass exploitation was 5 hours. A site that waits for a monthly check can be hit before anyone looks.

What is a backdoor, and why does it bring the hacker back?

A backdoor is a small hidden file or account that lets an attacker return without a password. It is often disguised as an ordinary plugin file, a fake theme file or an extra admin user. Deleting the visible spam does nothing to it.

Real cases show how quickly this happens. The 2026 Elementor Pro flaw let attackers upload files through forms and drop web shells, according to a Q3 2026 write-up. A web shell is a backdoor. The fix shipped August 19, 2026, but a site cleaned before updating can be re-entered.

What are the usual reasons for reinfection?

Most repeat hacks come from a short list. This table pairs each with the check that catches it. Cleaning the visible damage without closing these doors is why the same infection returns, so work down the table and fix each one before you call the site clean.

CauseWhat it looks likeWhat fixes it
Hidden backdoorSpam returns days after cleanupFile and database sweep, not just a scan
Outdated plugin or themeSame hack, same pagesUpdate or replace it, remove unused ones
Weak or reused passwordsNew admin users appearReset every password, add 2FA, reset secret keys
Hacked neighbor siteSeveral sites on one hosting account fail togetherClean the whole account
Restored infected backupMalware reappears after restoreRestore from before the date of infection, then update
Unpatched PHPServer-level compromiseRun a supported PHP version

Several of these can be true at once, which is why the fix is a short investigation, not a single click.

What does a hack look like when it is spam?

GoDaddy's annual security report found 834,661 infected sites across more than 34 million scans in 2025. The mix was 41.5 percent malware, 35.2 percent SEO spam and 21.7 percent malicious redirects. Spam and redirects together were more than half of those infections, so strange pages in search results are a common sign.

So a reinfection may look like odd search results, gambling or pharma keywords, or visitors sent somewhere else. The same report says gambling spam overtook Japanese-keyword spam for the first time in over a decade. If your site shows these signs, see My WordPress Site Was Hacked: What Do I Do in the First Hour?.

Does PHP matter for repeat hacks?

It can. PHP is the layer under WordPress. The php2shell flaws, disclosed October 21, 2026, let an attacker run commands on a server without a password, and CISA listed them as exploited on October 26. Our php2shell explainer covers it.

If your host runs an old PHP version, a cleaned site can be re-compromised from below. Check yours with the free PHP version checker.

What does a lasting fix include at Cuanto Labs?

Our Cleanup + Hardening package is $895. It starts with the root cause, then adds core, plugin and theme updates, replacement of abandoned plugins, Google and blocklist review requests, and WAF and 2FA setup. It takes 2 to 3 business days and includes a free re-clean for 90 days.

If you need only the basics, Emergency Cleanup is $495 for one site, with a free re-clean for 30 days. Stores and multi-site accounts are $1,495. See WordPress security. For price context, read How Much Does WordPress Malware Removal Cost?.

How do I stop it from happening again?

Keep everything updated on a schedule, remove plugins you do not use, use unique passwords with two-factor sign-in, and run a supported PHP version. Then have someone watching, because a gap of a few hours is enough for automated attacks.

That ongoing part is what a website care plan does: updates, checks and a person who sees alerts. We cannot promise a site will never be attacked, but regular upkeep closes the doors that most attacks use.

Frequently asked questions

Will deleting the infected plugin remove the hack?

Not always. The plugin may be gone while a backdoor remains elsewhere in your files or database.

Is a security plugin enough?

A scanner helps, but it does not replace updates, strong passwords and a human review after a hack.

How long does a cleanup take?

Our packages take 24 to 48 hours for an emergency cleanup and 2 to 3 business days with hardening.
