My Host Says Upgrade PHP: What Should I Do?

What does it mean when my host says I must upgrade PHP?

It means the PHP version running your website is old, and your host plans to stop offering it. PHP is the software that builds your pages on the server. When a version loses support, hosts retire it, and your site must move to a newer one or risk errors, extra fees or being switched automatically.

Is the PHP upgrade notice real or a scam?

Most are real, but verify before you click. Hosts do send these notices, especially after the php2shell flaw announced October 21, 2026. Bluehost, for example, states on its help page that it supports PHP 8.1 and higher. Scam emails copy that look, so never trust the links inside them.

Do not use links in the email. Log in to your hosting account directly and look for the same notice there. The PHP version setting is usually in cPanel or the hosting dashboard.

How urgent is the PHP upgrade my host asked for?

If your site runs PHP 8.1 or older, treat it as urgent. The PHP team says 8.1 and older no longer receive updates, per its 2026 news page, and CISA advised taking unsupported PHP systems offline until patched, per its alert.

If you run 8.2, you have until December 31, 2026, the end date on the PHP supported versions page. Either way, do it in weeks, not months.

What happens if I ignore my host's PHP upgrade notice?

Usually one of three things: the host forces the change on its own date, the old version is kept for an extra fee, or the version is removed and the site shows errors. A forced switch with no testing is the riskiest outcome, because a broken plugin can take the whole site down.

GoDaddy, for example, moved PHP 8.1 to a paid "PHP Extended Support" add-on on January 1, 2026, per its help page. Read your host's policy for the exact deadline.

What should I check before I change the PHP version?

Check what you run today, what your plugins support, and whether you can undo the change. Spend about five minutes on the list below before you touch any setting. Skipping this step is the most common reason a simple version switch turns into an outage that lasts an afternoon.

  • • Your current version. Use the free PHP version checker or your hosting panel.
  • • A fresh backup of files and database, stored off the server.
  • • Your plugin and theme list. Look for any not updated in over a year.
  • • Your must-work pages. Contact form, login, checkout, booking.
  • • The rollback path. In most panels you can switch the version back in a click.

How do I upgrade PHP safely, step by step?

Work on a copy first, then switch the live site during a quiet hour. The sequence matters more than the speed, because each stage catches a different kind of failure. The table shows the stages, what happens in each, and who usually does the work, so you know what to ask for.

StageWhat happensWho usually does it
BackupFull copy of files and databaseYou or your developer
Staging testCopy of the site runs the new PHPDeveloper or host tool
FixesUpdate or replace failing pluginsDeveloper
SwitchChange the PHP version liveYou or your developer
RecheckTest every key page, watch error logsDeveloper

If something fails after the switch, go back to the old version first, then diagnose. Our guide My Site Broke After a PHP Upgrade explains how.

Which PHP version should I ask for?

PHP 8.3 or 8.4, in most cases. Both are supported for years: 8.3 through December 31, 2027 and 8.4 through December 31, 2028, per the PHP supported versions page. Ask your host for the latest patched release in that line, because php2shell fixes landed in 8.3.36 and 8.4.27.

Also ask the host to confirm the exact release in writing once the change is done.

Do I have to upgrade through my host, or can someone else do it?

Anyone with access can do it, and you do not need your host's help desk. A developer can work from a staging copy and handle plugin fixes, which a host support agent usually will not do. Hosts typically only flip the version setting.

If your host also offers a paid extended-support add-on, treat it as a delay tactic. It buys time, but it does not fix incompatible plugins. For the next step up, see Is PHP 8.1 Still Supported?.

Can Cuanto Labs do the upgrade for me?

Yes. Our PHP upgrade service starts with a $295 PHP Health Check, credited toward any upgrade booked within 30 days. A standard WordPress site upgrade is $3,500 with a 30-day fix of regressions. We build the staging copy, fix failing plugins, switch the version and confirm in writing.

Sites on our website care plans get this handled as part of ongoing maintenance.

What is the next step?

Log in to your host directly, note the deadline, and check your PHP version. If you want a second opinion before you reply to the host, book a call and forward us the notice. We will tell you how urgent it is for your site and what a safe plan looks like.
