PHP 8.2 Ends December 31: What Will Moving Cost?

PHP 8.2 stops getting security fixes on December 31, 2026. Here is what that means for your website, what moving usually costs, and how to plan it before the deadline.

PHP 8.2 Ends December 31: What Will Moving Cost?

When does PHP 8.2 reach end of life?

PHP 8.2 stops receiving security fixes on December 31, 2026, according to the PHP supported versions page. After that date, a new flaw found in 8.2 will normally go unpatched. Your site will not stop working that day, but it will stop being protected by the PHP team.

Is PHP 8.2 still supported today?

Yes, but only for security. PHP 8.2 is in its security-only phase, which means the PHP team fixes serious flaws but adds nothing new. That is why the php2shell fix reached 8.2 as release 8.2.35, covered in our php2shell explainer.

If your server runs 8.2, check the exact release number. A site on 8.2.34 or lower still lacks that fix. Our free PHP version checker shows what your site reports to visitors.

Which PHP versions are supported after 8.2?

Three newer lines are supported, each with a later end date: 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5. The dates below come from the PHP supported versions page, checked October 27, 2026. If you are choosing a target version, the later the end date, the more years you get before the next move.

What happens if I stay on PHP 8.2 after December 31?

Nothing visible happens on January 1. The risk builds slowly. Each new PHP flaw found after the cutoff stays open on your server, and attackers move fast. CISA's advice for php2shell was blunt: organizations that continue to use unsupported PHP should take PHP-based systems offline until patched, per its alert.

You may also hit practical limits. Hosts tend to retire old versions, and plugin makers stop testing against them. Some hosts sell paid extended support, which is a stopgap, not a plan.

Which PHP version should I move to?

For most sites, PHP 8.4 is the sensible target today, because it is supported through 2028 and is mature enough for most plugins. PHP 8.3 is the safer pick if a key plugin or theme has not been tested on 8.4 yet. PHP 8.5 is supported longest but is newer, so test more carefully.

Whichever you choose, ask your host to confirm the exact release afterward. A version number alone does not prove the php2shell fix is in.

How much does moving off PHP 8.2 cost?

It depends on what your site is built with. Moving from 8.2 to 8.3 or 8.4 is usually a smaller job than moving off 7.4, because fewer old features were removed. The work is mostly testing: plugins, theme, forms and checkout. These are our fixed prices for the upgrade work:

The Health Check is credited toward any upgrade booked within 30 days. For a deeper cost breakdown, see How Much Does a PHP Upgrade Cost?.

How do I get ready before the deadline?

Start with the version, then test on a copy, then switch. Most owners can finish the first step in minutes. Leave the actual switch for a quiet day, not the last week of December, when hosts and developers are slow to respond.

  • • Check your version. Use the PHP version checker or your hosting panel.
  • • Make a full backup. Include files and the database, and confirm you can restore it.
  • • Test on a staging copy. Your host may offer one with a single click.
  • • List your must-work pages. Contact form, login, checkout, booking.
  • • Switch, then recheck. Test those pages again and keep the old version available for a quick rollback.

Can Cuanto Labs handle the move for me?

Yes. We build a staging copy, fix or replace plugins that fail on the new version, switch PHP with a rollback ready, and send a short written confirmation. Our PHP upgrade service covers WordPress sites, stores and custom PHP apps. We cannot promise every old plugin survives, but we tell you which will not.

Does a PHP upgrade affect my search rankings or my host bill?

Usually not, if the move is done carefully. The version change itself is invisible to visitors and search engines when pages keep loading the same way. Speed often improves on newer PHP. Your bill rarely changes either, since supported versions are normally included in standard hosting plans, though extended support for old versions is often a paid extra.

The risk to rankings comes from downtime or broken pages, which is why testing first matters. Keep an eye on your contact form and key landing pages for a few days after the switch.

What is the next step?

Check your PHP version today, then put the upgrade on the calendar before mid-December. If you want help, book a call and tell us your hosting provider and your current PHP version. We will tell you whether a quick switch or a full test is the right size of job.
